Scholarships Awarded

It is with great pleasure that I announce the winners of the WSBA Scholarship Award. Congratulations go to first year student Lonny Stephens, and second year student William Cooper, who each won $500 for their submission on the topic of “What is My Motivation for Entering the Patient Care Equipment Field to Work as a Biomedical Equipment Technician?” I would like to thank the seven other entrants who also submitted essays for consideration.

Thanks also to the judges, Tom Hudon, Corrie Schumacher, Viki Philips, Dennis McMahon, Teri Anderson and Lynda Wilkinson.

The WSBA is proud to support the BMET program at North Seattle Community College.

A New Year

Greetings and welcome to a new year with the Washington State Biomedical Association! We’re off to a great start with our first meeting which was held January 20^th at Swedish Medical Center’s Ballard campus. Thank you to the folks at Swedish!

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our new President-Elect, Jeff Schweer. I’d also like to thank Sandy Whyte, Corrie Schumacher, Jeannie Jazuk-Dunn and Geoff McAlpin for agreeing to stay on for another year and keep things running smoothly.

Your officers have been discussing ways of encouraging more member participation and we would like your feedback on these ideas:

Holding meetings on Fridays instead of Wednesdays
Video taping meetings for web broadcast
Rolling the annual meeting in with the symposium
Holding a CBET study class

I also wanted to take a moment and give a belated “Thank you!” to Philips for once again hosting the annual meeting at their Bothell facilities.

CMIA 2010 Symposium

Corrie and I represented the WSBA at the CMIA’s symposium in San Diego this weekend, we were on a fact finding mission and returned with a wealth of information that we will be happy to share with all our members and hopefully apply some of it in our own upcoming WSBA Symposium on September 24th & 25th.

AAMI’s CE-IT Community Focuses on First Call Duties

New Document Offers Guidance on “First Call” Responsibilities
For Healthcare Networking Issues
New guidance is now available to help clinical engineering (CE) and information technology (IT) departments sort out service calls.
The CE-IT Community has published a guidance document designed to help healthcare facilities assign “first call” duties between CE and IT departments.
The CE-IT Community—a collaboration among members of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE), and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)—was created in 2008 to develop resources, best practices and networking opportunities to address CE-IT convergence issues in healthcare.
Traditionally CE services medical devices while IT handles networks and personal computers (PC). But as medical devices become more computerized and integrated into networks, the lines of responsibility have blurred.
The new guidance document—entitled Best Practices For Assigning First Call Responsibilities For Healthcare Networking Issues—offers advice for creating a system of support.

WSBA Annual Symposium

The WSBA’s Annual Symposium took place September 19 at North Seattle Community College. The two-day Symposium featured a “Meet and Great” Reception, five classes on topics such as ultrasound service basics, surgical table repair and LP 20 repair, and fantastic Italian dinner at the college.

In planning the event last spring, the WSBA officers entertained some very ambitious ideas. However, the initial commitment for attendance that we received from members was not enough to support some of these goals. For example, we weren’t able to offer a class on x-ray basics taught by the good folks at Ditech. Although they were willing to support us, we didn’t feel we could ask them to come all this way if we couldn’t guarantee a minimum turnout. We’re open to ideas that will encourage more participation.

In my opinion, the WSBA has two very solid strengths: a core group of members who show up, participate and pitch in willingly, and vendors who willingly and happily donate time, energy, and money to support us.

Finally, I’d like to recognize, on behalf the members and officers of the WSBA, Lynda Wilkinson for her tireless efforts to make sure we had a successful day of training and North Seattle Community College for continuing to support our organization. And a big THANKS for all the manufacturer’s representatives who helped to make our 2009 Symposium a success:
